Building a Web part that interfaces with a SQL server database

I cannot find a valid and complete walkthrough to build a Web part that interfaces with a SQL server database for viewing and updating tables. I know this is a new technology (one more!), but this is very difficult to understand for me.
Building a Web part starts by building a user control with the desired functionality. To view and update a SQL server table you can use the new GridView and a SqlDataSource, which is fairly easy and achieved without writing a single line of code. Next you add a Web part to a page, drop your user control inside it and you're done.
