Accessing a control on an independent application

Regarding accessing a control on another windows application: What if it is an independent application? What would be the optimal method of gathering data from, say, a scrollable list box (ie., a list box that's not accessible through any shortcuts (ie: alt-l))?
There are a number of ways to communicate between applications. I successfully use named pipes to communicate between independent applications.
