SharePoint 2007 is an integrated platform around which enterprises can develop intranet, extranet, and Web applications. Because these applications share a server suite, functionality like content management and enterprise search is integrated throughout, which improves collaboration and information sharing for all end users.

Within SharePoint 2007, content types represent groups of items with similar properties -- author names, project names and so on.

Working with Content Types, Chapter 6 of Beginning SharePoint 2007: Building Team Solutions with MOSS 2007, introduces developers to SharePoint's various content types, which fall into categories such as business intelligence, folders, lists and page layouts. The authors then describe the main properties of all content types, including workflow activities, policy management and information panel settings. The chapter ends with a section regarding content type management.
