Addressing common SQL Server questions

SQL Server, like any software development topic, lends itself to frequently asked questions; in this case they tend to revolve around rows, columns and manipulating the data in said rows and columns.
Recognizing this abundance of FAQs, sister site SearchOracle.com, which gets its fair share of SQL questions, recently posted a three-part series highlighting common questions its site experts have addressed through the years.
Common SQL Server questions, part 1 addresses "novice questions" -- for example, the difference between inner and outer joins, between functions and procedures, and between JOIN and SUB-QUERY. While some may laugh at the simplicity of these questions, it helps to remember that very few are born experts.
Common SQL Server questions, part 2 looks at "homework questions." These tend to go unanswered since, well, university homework is usually not meant to be done with the help of experienced industry experts, but every once in a while something compelling, and therefore relevant to the SQL developer community at large, does come up.
Common SQL Server questions, part 3 examines "serious questions." Some, admittedly, come from homework, but many pop up in the proverbial real world. These tend to involve duplicates, pagination, concatenation, or what the experts have deemed "Top N." read on and it will make sense.
