The Microsoft .NET Development Series, published by Pearson Education, features nearly two dozen titles that cover VB.NET, ADO.NET, C# and other important topics in the .NET framework. Among the titles in the series is Visual Studio Tools for Office: Using C# with Word, Excel, Office and InfoPath, which offers developers at Visual Studio 2005 Tools for Office.
Chapter 15, Working with the Actions Pane, refers to what the authors describe as "kind of a contraction between the Document Actions and the task pane." This task pane is part of Office 2003's Smart Documents development platform. The aim of Smart Documents was to integrate new XML features in Word and Excel into Document Actions. Since Smart Documents were designed for the COM world, VSTO brings it into .NET.
In the chapter, authors Eric Carter and Eric Lippert discuss the Actions Pane architecture and demonstrate how to add Windows Forms, user controls and functionality like scrolling and hiding to the Actions Pane. The authors also provide a list of methods and properties to avoid.
