- Expression Graphic Designer is Microsoft's new software tool for creating the images that appear in an application's user interface, or UI. The product supports both vector and bitmap types of graphics and allows application designers to use effects such as fringes and drop shadows. Through the use of XAML, which is Microsoft's XML-based Extensible Application Markup Language, users can directly export the images to the Windows Presentation Foundation and Visual Studio 2005, both of which are Microsoft's tools for application development in the .NET Framework.
Expression Graphic Designer is one of three products in Microsoft's Expression suite of tools for Web designers. The other tools are the Expression Interactive Designer, which lets designers combine 2D images with multimedia content and 3D images, and the Expression Web Designer, which lets designers add elements such as cascading style sheets to Web applications. The Expression suite is viewed by many as Microsoft's response to Adobe's popular Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash graphic design products.
Many developers still refer to Expression Graphic Designer by its code name, Acrylic.
