In late August, Embarcadero Technologies announced a new version of its RAD Studio. The new suite, called RAD Studio 2010, features updated versions of Delphi, C++ Builder, and Delphi Prism and comes in three SKUs: Professional, Enterprise, and Architect.

New RAD Studio features
RAD Studio includes many new database, GUI, and developer-productivity features.

New database features start with updated drivers for Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and MySQL. It also adds support for the open-source Firebird database, an RDBMS that serves up many ANSI SQL standard features that targets multiple platforms, including Windows, Linux, and a variety of Unix platforms. The new suite includes improved support for HTTP communication protocols and in-process connectivity for DataSnap Windows and .NET multitier apps, as well as a simplified process for creating new DataSnap servers.

Other key RAD Studio 2010 enhancements include the ability to add to touch and gesture-based abilities to a variety of applications types, including tablet, touchpad, and kiosk applications. The suite also includes several developer productivity enhancements, such as IDE Insight, which Embarcadero describes as a time-saving tool for finding files, components, and other items.

RAD Studio's developer tools
RAD Studio 2010 includes three separate components: Delphi, C++ Builder, and Delphi Prism.

Delphi 2010 is Embarcadero's continuation of the Object Pascal-based tool created originally by Borland. Delphi and C++ Builder receive many new features in common, including an integrated formatter that automates coding styles consistently; debug thread control for freezing, thawing, and isolating particular threads; new debugger options, including the ability to ignore non-user breakpoints; and an updated look-and-feel for working with modeling diagrams.

Delphi Prism is an IDE for RemObject's Oxygene Object Pascal-based programming language (previously called Chrome). Delphi Prism ships with a Visual Studio-based IDE, or you can integrate Delphi Prism directly into Visual Studio.

Key features include the ability to build .NET DataSnap applications and target Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X platforms through the use of Mono. New features include support for dynamic typing (leveraging .NET 4.0); support for Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP), centering on the ability to add, remove or modify method events, properties add classes by applying attributes (aspects) to classes or members; and increased support for the Delphi language.

The SKUs
RAD Studio also chips with three different SKUs: Professional, Enterprise, and Architect.

Embarcadero targets Professional at software developers and teams building native Windows, .NET, and touch-screen applications with or without local database persistence. Features include local database connectivity to InterBase, Blackfish SQL, and MySQL in Delphi and C++ Builder; VCL with a limit of five connections; Blackfish SQL deployment for a single user; and UML code visualization.

Embarcadero targets the Enterprise version at software developers and teams building client/server, multitier, and Web applications for native Windows and .NET. It includes all the features of the Professional version, plus these additional features, among others: database server connectivity to the previously mentioned databases, plus Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, Informix, and Sybase; remote server connectivity to InterBase and Blackfish SQL if you're creating an app that targets the .NET platform; DataSnap app and client development; VCL with no connection limit; and full two-way UML modeling functionality.

Embarcadero targets the Architect version at application developers and teams building data-intensive client/server GUI and Web apps with enterprise database systems. It includes all the features of the Enterprise edition, plus the ability to reverse engineer and optimize databases; create logical and physical models from databases and script files, and the ability to generate code from models for what Embarcadero calls "forward engineering."

Pricing
US buyers can purchase and download the suite.

The Professional version of the suite is $1399 for a new user download, $649 for an upgrade; the Enterprise version is $2799 new, and $1799 for an upgrade; and the Architect version is $4299 new, $2799 for an upgrade.

You can learn more about the suite on Embarcadero's site.
