Microsoft is sponsoring a contest for the best applications that take advantage of Windows 7.

The grand prize winner will take home $17,777 and an invitation to attend and travel to PDC09, among other perks. Six runner-ups will receive $7777 each, an invitation to attend PDC09, and more benefits. Other prizes include smaller cash amounts, laptops, and special trophies. Microsoft will award $1000 each to seven early-bird entrants.

Note that there are various conditions attached to these prizes, so be sure to check out the official contest site for a complete list of prizes and all the attendant details, restrictions, and tax implications.

Submission dates
Microsoft opened the contest up on July 13, 2009, and it will accept new entries until October 10, 2009. Your entry must be received by August 15, 2009 to be eligible for an early-bird prize. The maximum allowed file size for your entry is 10 MB, and the FAQ notes that Cloud Services-style applications are permitted.

The site for the contest states that entries must solve one or more of six basic scenarios (such as simplifying everyday tasks or helping users safeguard their work). Entries must also take advantage of one or more of the following Windows 7 technologies: Libraries, Windows Touch, Shell Integration, DirectX 11, or the Sensor and Location Platform.

One finalist each will be chosen from seven distinct geographical areas: China; Europe and the United Kingdom; India and Southeast Asia; Japan, Korea, Australia, Antarctica, and New Zealand; Middle East and Africa; North America; and South and Central America. The grand-prize winner will be selected from among the seven finalists.
