Oslo is Microsoft's emerging grand vision for modeling service-oriented applications. The emphasis to date has been on vision. But at the TechEd 2008 Developer conference June 3 to 6 in Orlando, FL, Oslo will get at least a bit better definition.

Sessions touching on Oslo at TechEd include 'Microsoft Strategy and Vision for SOA' led by Oliver Sharp, 'The Road to Oslo' led by David Chappell, and 'Framework and Microsoft BizTalk Best Practices with an Eye toward Oslo' under the tutelage of Jon Flanders.

Chappell indicates Oslo is likely to include a general-purpose modeling language, role-specific modeling tools, a shared model repository, and a distributed service bus.

Of course, there is a lot more. Gregory Leake will discuss new configuration services for .NET, Clemens Vasters will talk about cloud computing technologies that are presently going under the code name of BizTalk Services. And Jon Flanders (again) will uncover the role of REST-style computing as it relates to WCF.

There was a time when TechEd was mostly oriented toward developers. Over the years that changed. IT and administration content has gradually overpowered the developer content, at least in terms of perception. With this edition of TechEd, we have TechEd split into two distinct conferences, with one conference dedicated to development. For a lot of coders that is very welcome.
