Silverlight 1.0 released; Linux support coming

Microsoft also said it has entered into a formal partnership with Novell to develop Silverlight for Linux. This implementation, known as Moonlight, will support the Firefox, Konqueror, and Opera browsers and Silverlight's v1.0 and v1.1 programming models, Scott Guthrie indicated in a blog entry entitled Silverlight 1.0 Released and Silverlight for Linux Announced.

Silverlight is Microsoft's framework for both building and viewing Rich Internet Applications that support audio, animation and streaming video.

It already supports the Windows and Mac platforms and the IE, Firefox and Safari browsers.

Silverlight 1.0 offers a JavaScript-based programming model; version 1.1, which remains in alpha, will offer a .NET Framework-based programming model -- one that includes dynamic languages like IronRuby, IronPython and Pascal in addition to Visual Basic and C#.

With the release of Silverlight 1.0, Microsoft indicated that nearly three dozen design agencies, ISVs, systems integrators and infrastructure providers have signed on to become Silverlight Initiative partners. In addition, several customers, including Major League Baseball and Entertainment Tonight Online, have deployed Silverlight 1.0 applications.

Silverlight 1.0 is available for download at http://silverlight.net/.

Two other items have been released as well. One is the Silverlight 1.0 SDK, or Software Development Kit, which includes documentation, samples and quick start help. The other is a trial version of Microsoft Expression Media Encoder, which lets Web designers import numerous formats of audio and video files and add features like credits, watermarks and captions.
