The next version of Visual Studio Team System, code-named Rosario, has been released as a Community Technical Preview (CTP).

Rosario is available as a Virtual PC download and thus requires Virtual PC 2004 SP1, Virtual Server 2005 R2 or Virtual PC 2007. It will run on either Windows Vista or Windows XP. Also available as part of the CTP is the Visual Studio Team System "Rosario" documentation and a VSTS "Rosario" white paper.

VSTS is Microsoft's offering for improving collaboration within the software development life cycle. Its current version, compatible with Visual Studio 2005, has editions available for four key SDLC roles -- architect, software tester, developer and database developer -- as well as a common server, the Team Foundation Server, for hosting development projects.

Rosario will be compatible with Visual Studio 2008. However, as VS 2008 in its second beta and Rosario is only in its first CTP, the new Visual Studio Team System will not come out at the same time as the new Visual Studio. (A timetable for Rosario has not been announced.)

Earlier this year, Microsoft outlined some key Visual Studio Team System 'Rosario' objective:

  • Better testing and quality assurance tools
  • Better line of sight between theoretical project requirements and what actually gets done
  • Better communication between development groups and IT operations
  • Better scalability

Additional information about the CTP release is available on Microsoft's Visual Studio Team System Code Name "Rosario" page.
