Collaborative portals have gained favor in recent years, but, for remote and mobile users, they lead to the same type of issues that e-mail users encounter. That is, when you are offline, you are out of the loop. Although Microsoft offers platforms and tools to deal with these issues, Colligo Networks sees an opening for a software product that provides laptop users with needed offline access to SharePoint team sites.

The company has launched Colligo Reader for SharePoint and Contributor for SharePoint. These applications support offline use of SharePoint sites. Colligo Contributor for SharePoint is targeted at laptop users who need to frequently modify content while offline and then synchronize back to the SharePoint site when online.

Colligo Contributor users can create and edit documents, forms, list items and their associated properties. When a user returns online, their changes are synchronized back to the server.

Staying ahead of Microsoft, which purchased Groove last year in part to provide similar capabilities, is no easy task. Synchronization and replication are key factors, said Barry Jinks, president and CEO, Colligo Networks.

"Off line, we faithfully represent all the logic that a designer put into a SharePoint project," said Jinks.

Jinks has created an interesting analysis of different SharePoint-related architectures via blog entries at http://www.offlinesharepoint.com/microsoft-outlook-2007-beta-1-offline-sharepoint-feature-evaluation-%e2%80%93-part-1/
