The best things in life are free. .NET consultant James Avery further augments this maxim in the December 2005 issue of MSDN Magazine with his article, "Ten essential tools: Visual Studio add-ins every developer should download now." Avery notes that Visual Studio's rich extensibility model lends itself to hosting software add-ins.

The 10 downloads Avery identifies supplement VS 2005 in a variety of ways. Smart Paster, for example, lets developers paste from the clipboard into Visual Studio using a certain format, while CopySourceAsHTML lets you copy and paste code as HTML, which makes it easier to read and understand when it's on the Web. Other downloads ease the processes of ASP.NET caching, unit testing development, XML comments and sharing code snippets.
