It sounds like you are losing the Property window. To get it back, choose Properties Window on the View menu, or press F4 if you are using the default keyboard.

Unable to view properties without closing project and reopening it
I am having a problem with VB.NET. When I open a project, I can look at the properties of controls in the project. But once I run a debug session, I am unable to view properties without closing the project and reopening it.
